How much fear is enough? We are inundated with messages of fear! The financial future of the country is on the skids and terrorists are plotting to destroy us, if the economy doesn't crater first! Not to mention the sex offenders who live down the street! Okay you get the picture and it is apparently not pretty. So what now! Do we lock ourselves in our homes only venturing out for work and supplies. Doesn't that feel a little like living under siege? If you are among the few who are living in gated communities then you are already enjoying a privileged life under siege. If you are perhaps on the lower end of the economic scale you could find a group, usually well armed in a rural area that would let you join. All of these are presented here as options and choices that are available to people in fear.
There is another choice that is also available to each of us! It begins with a conscious effort on our part to stop spreading the message of fear. This is actually harder to do then you think. We are conditioned from a young age to spread these messages and it takes a serious commitment to begin to break this pattern. One of my earlier blogs addresses the difference between subjective and objective fear and that is where we must begin. One fear is real and the other is fueled by our imagination. I will state that most of the fears that grip us on a daily basis are largely subjective (fueled by our imagination) and these are what I am a referring to now. We must begin by questioning their validity and potential impact on our lives.
If a friend or loved one is voicing these fears it is important to listen without being reactive. The truth is just allowing another to speak without attempting to discredit or comfort them will go a long ways towards alleviating them. This process of listening intently will make a difference and after doing so, we may if asked offer our input. Engaging in this process makes us all stronger and fosters a sense of community. If more of us take the time to listen we will find that instead of fueling the flames of fear we wil actually help to stuff them out. So the next time someone brings you an offering of fear please stop and address its source before deciding if you wish to pass it on.
