If you arent sure when you last changed your furnace filter its probably time to do it. Save yourself a call to a repair company.

HVAC Technician Speak in Plain English

Some important questions to ask about heating and cooling, including how air conditioners and furnaces are rated for efficiency.

Q: What is an air conditioner SEER rating?

A: Air conditioners are given a SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rating) based on electrical usage. A higher rating means the air conditioner will be less expensive to operate. For example, a 13 seer unit will cost half as much to run as a 6 seer unit. Although this rating is important, other factors are equally important wh… Continue

Hows your A/C working?

Does it seem like you air conditioner isnt cooling as well as it used to? Before you call a repair person try this.
First check or change your filter. Dirty filters slow down the air flow across the evaporator coil (the coil in the house near the furnace) causing reduced performance.
Second clean the condenser coil ( outdoor part of the cooling system).
The indoor coil has a filter to keep out dirt, the outdoor unit just sits out in the weather all the time.
Remember all that pollen on your car… Continue

Negetive feedback...Good thing?

As a service provider I love hearing positive feedback from my customers. It is not uncommon to receive payment in the mail with a note expressing thanks for a job well done.
Many times folks call our office after one of our techs leave their home to give the guys kudos. It is nice to hear from a satisfied customer, But(this might sound nutty) it is even better to hear from a dissatisfied customer. I don't have a chance to make it right if I don't know what I did wrong. Negative feed back is as… Continue

After hours service calls

I think most people realize that having a repair person come to your home after 5 pm or on weekends costs much more than during weekday business hours. There is a whole list of reasons why it costs more so I wont go into that. Many service companies charge double the hourly rate to work on a holiday.
To save money on that after hours furnace repair call pick up 2 or 3 electric heaters at the hardware store. Get the kind that shut off if they tip over. I have seen 1500 watt heaters for around $20… Continue

Programmable Thermostats

Many people that I talk to ask me about programmable thermostats. Do they really save money? According to the utlity company the average home owner can save up to 10% on their annual utility cost by setting the temperature back no more than 3 degrees during the time they are sleeping or not at home. Its easy to forget to set the thermostat back yourself so the programmable stat sets the furnace back or forward for you on a schedule that you set up according to your needs. Programmable thermostat… Continue

Tom, square feet is 3754. I don't see anything about BTU's though. There is a sticker on the side and under pressure is says 300PSIG.... I have heard that buying a new thermostat helps too as apparently the current ones in out builder's homes are one of the cheapest.....Any thoughts you might have would be great. I am willing to pay to have an evaluation done as well if you guys do that?

Tom, enjoyed your blogs. Very informative and helpful. My wife and I recently moved into a newly constructed home (August) and I have doubts that the furnace installed is sufficient for the square feet of the home. Absent calling the sub who installed the unit how am I able to tell if the furnace is the correct size for my home? Thanks.
