Rick,

Thanks for your praise for "Columbia Highlands: Exploring Washington's Last Frontier". I agree, it's a gorgeous book. You're so right about how important these wild lands in Spokane's backyard are. The Kettle Crest and Selkirks need more fans like you.

You mentioned hiking...if you want to explore these areas in a group, there are free, guided hikes at www.conservationnw.org/hikes09. I can't resist recommending Hoodoo Canyon & Emerald lake this Saturday.

Enjoy!

Hi Rick, Sorry so slow to respond! The best thing for your trip to China is to go with an open mind and wide eyes. I think you will find the guides well educated and very informative.

The mix of Communisum and Capitalism is astounding. New skyscrapers being built next to ancient temples, huge apartment complexes next to shanty towns, bicycles by the thousands going by Lexus dealerships, the contrasts are endless.

I would suggest you read a bit of China's history. I read a lot before going but was not even close to prepared for what I was to see. The Great Wall is amazing, as you stand on it and imagine the thousands that carried each stone 2000 years ago. It would be as if we built a wall from Washington to California along the ridges of the Cascade mountains! The Terracotta Warriors were beyond imagination, pictures don't even come close to reality of them. The quantity, the beauty, the craftsmanship are all amazing. Not to mention the story behind why and how they were created.

Take lots of memory for your camera, I filled up 8 GBs in 12 days!

Where in China will you be going?

Hi Rick, I have an inquiry into Brent at EWU. Will keep you posted. I will also need to have you sign AGAIN! They made a change to the agreement and so we have to go through that exercise again. Not sure when the document will be ready. Apologies in advance!

Thanks for the note, Rick. We are ready for the homepage update...and for Maria's return on the 22nd (maternity leave) so we can give more attention to the website.

Do you think these kids will ever get back to school?!?! (rumor has it, not until Friday). I don't know about at your house, but we are getting really ancy (sp?) here. And we even get out for at least an hour or 2 each day. Hey, I wanted to ask you....I was at a neighborhood party on NYE and we were discussing snow removal and were wondering if you guys have to maintain your own roads back there? Do you have a neighborhood association that handles that and hires out? Just wondering, because maybe we would want to use that same person sometime, as they drive by here. Drive Safe.
