Thoughts on the market after the S&P downgrade

8 August 2011

Let’s lead with a quote from a man who is highly regarded by both investors and industry professionals.

“I’m kind of amused by the fact that a year or so ago, Standard & Poor’s ratings was the gang that couldn’t shoot straight, a joke, and now they’re the last word.  Interestingly enough, Moody’s hasn’t said a word… We’re focused on very short-term things here, too much noise and not enough perspective.” - Jack Bogle, senior chairman, Vanguard…

How to meet people when you're not a natural at it

"Studies have shown" - one of my all-time favorite phrases - that the biggest fear for most of us is speaking in public.  I'm willing to wager that a very close second is attending an event that's primarily strangers and actually be expected to meet and talk with them.

Messrs. Kavilas and Battle have set up LP to represent an outstanding combination of high-tech and high-touch.  The latter is through the workshops and events available to all of us.  It's likely - unless you're those…

Perspective - The dollar and commodity prices

Posted on November 2, 2009 at 8:57pm 0 Comments

The dollar dropping forever is not a good thing. However, for now, it’s not altogether terrible. If nothing else, it’s helping US companies of all types and sizes do business overseas. Let’s look at some of the mechanics of what’s going on.

Whether a currency – anybody’s – is considered weak or strong is directly related to what return that currency provides compared with other currencies. So, since the prevailing interest rate here is, effectively, zero – the dollar is considered to… Continue

The economy and the markets are moving forward - so should you

“There is far more danger in a public monopoly than there is in a private monopoly, for when government goes into business it can always shift its losses to the taxpayer. The Government never really goes into business, for it never makes ends meet and that is the first requisite of business. It just mixes a little business with a lot of politics and no one ever gets a chance to find out… Continue

Mixed economic signals

On Friday, the Department of Labor reported that the unemployment rate had moved up to 7.6% from 7.2% due to another 664,000 people having been dropped from payrolls all around the country. That's not good, no matter how you try to spin it. While not good, it's in line with the percentages we saw at the bottom of the 1973-74 and 1982-1983 recessions, so it's not totally unusual.

As I mentioned in my closing radio market report yesterday, reasonable people have legitimate cause for… Continue

That's pretty funny - my ol' buddy Mikula who used to work at the pool with me sent me the same article yesterday...

As you know, I was a Marine Combat Instructor of Water Survival (MCIWS) and it was one helluva school that we attended down in Coronado Island. It was definitely three of the most demanding weeks of my life. As for the new changes, it sounds like they are making it easier to me, but maybe not... Could just be changing the skills tests, although I thought the old program was pretty good. I ran a lot of Marines through swim qualifications, and it was a good time for us. The first thing we did was have them remove any loose items, including rank pins, from their uniform. So we didn't know people's ranks, and it was pretty funny if you had an officer or a staff NCO, (and they didn't know our rank, because we were in red trunks and blue T-shirts), and we would be like, "Hey Marine, need you to follow directions here" and they would get so pissed... It was great.

I passed along the intel to Sgt. Tee and he got quite the kick out of it!

Best to you and your family!
