It's tough hearing that something may be wrong with your child. Even though I knew that my daughter was "different", hearing it from someone else made me feel so hopeless. But I was ready...ready to finally hear the test results that basically analy…

Dear Kristi, My biggest beef with the medical profession is that patients are consistently treated as if our time is not important. They seem to think nothing of having us wait half an hour, or much more, after our appointment times. I have had peopl…

What do you want others to know about you?
I have Neurofibromatosis (NF), but it doesn't have me. I'm working to educate the world about NF - and build a system of support and encouragement to the 1 out of 3000 people who have it, their families, and their friends. By the way, that means just about everyone.
Something fun or interesting about yourself?
I have almost died by drowning, kidnapping, car wrecks, and falling off the Pirate Ship ride. God wants me alive, not just to survive, but Thrive.

Being Thankful

When I was first diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis, I found it hard to be thankful for anything. I was mad, and angry. Falling into a depression, just as my mother had, years before. For a long time, I had denied the fact I had NF. I was ashamed and embarrassed, because I knew accepting it meant not only the fact that I had I life long disorder, but also, that I may be more like my brother than I thought.

I struggle everyday trying to live a gracious and positive life, but I sure feel better abo… Continue

Getting Doctors to Listen....

If you ask someone to marry you and they looked away and told you that they needed to think about it......To give them a week and they will send you a letter, with their response...How would you feel?

A doctor/patient relationship is a marriage of sorts. You put yourself out there in the most vulnerable of ways. An intimate trust is extended, every time we step foot in the doctors office.

YOU are the Doctors managers, in a sense. You have to express how much time you need from them. I walked i… Continue

Fight Fight Fight

What do you do when you are told "NO"? Do you accept that as the final answer, or do you fight?

When someone you love is sick, you go to the doctors, to get better. You trust that they will have your best interest at heart. But what if you ran into a doctor who basically said, they didn't know how to treat you? They knew you were sick, and understood the pain, but could offer you no solutions.

Years of pain, and hundreds of trips to the doctor, and I get sent away with some kind of "cover up"… Continue

Choosing to THRIVE with Neurofibromatosis

I have bad days. Do you? Sometimes I have REALLY bad days. I look in the mirror and see what's going on with my body, and I get so angry. IT'S NOT FAIR! I cry as I see the tumors multiply....what will I look like in a year? In 5 years? In 20?

Neurofibromatosis is a progressive disorder. It's cruel and steady and has no sympathy on who it touches. I hate it so much some days, that I find myself reaching for the razor blade, as I did years ago, when the first tumors began to show themselves.

I w… Continue

No problem, it makes more sense now. I was wondering how you randomly came across my posts. Hope to meet both of you soon. Interestingly enough, one of your sons looks very much like one of mine.

Wow, sorry I missed you at TM! I usually make it every week, but have been battling a cold lately. What were your impressions of the club? Are you looking to join TM or are you already in one and just visiting other groups? (I've done that also).

I do hope to meet up with you in person as well and learn more about you and your family. It sounds like you have a very interesting story.
