Strategic marketing advice for small businesses

As a former ad agency partner, and erstwhile marketing consultant, I've worked with a lot of business owners and managers over the years. Some are by nature great marketers. Others not so much. Root of most marketing strategy problems is the inability to see the world through the customer's eyes. If you see the world from your…See More

The Marketing Message Starter Kit

Hello fellow LaunchPaddians: When I talk to entrepreneurs and other owners or managers of small businesses, one subject they often have a little trouble with is how to make their messages more compelling. They know that often, they have just an instance, a few seconds or a minute to intrigue someone enough to start a conversation, or maybe a long-term relationship. …See More

The Chick-fil-A "mess"

I just wanted to share my analysis/casestudy/blog post on the Chick-fil-A situation. While I tend to take a side in this controversy, that's not what my post is about. I'm trying to take a look at Chick-fil-A's brand power strictly from a brand and marketing point of view. I'd be interested to get your feedback. The post is here: "Does It Really Matter What You, Or Anyone, Thinks…See More

11 reasons you should use Twitter for business

Posted on May 6, 2011 at 8:48am 0 Comments

Note: I have found Twitter to be a good complement to LaunchPad INW and other social media tools. This post originally appeared on The All Inbound Blog.

Twitter isn’t for everyone. But maybe it’s for you, and you just don’t…

Inbound marketing: a primer

Posted on April 1, 2011 at 3:00pm 7 Comments

I lost faith in the ability of traditional advertising to make a dent in most businesses years ago. The tipping point was probably when my boss strong-armed a client into producing a Super Bowl commercial. The client, an old beer brand, would have had better luck investing in the California Lotto. An entire year's budget was blown in one fell swoop.…

Trust

I don't know whether the Better Business Bureau still uses the slogan "Start With Trust."  But did you know that the BBB is funded by the companies it rates? That's gotta be a conflict of interest, right? Maybe it was a necessary business model 20 years ago. But today?

Well that's one example of an organization that fails to inspire trust. For more, here's my personal blog: http://bit.ly/trust7

More about telling your company story

Posted on March 10, 2011 at 9:00pm 0 Comments

I've always believed that having a great story is a huge advantage in marketing. And more businesses have a great story to tell than even realize it.

Here's a great blog post from Seth Godin, best-selling author on marketing and business strategy. Of course, it's about how companies should tell their story.

Interestingly, it's from 2006, yet the content is more timely now than…

Welcome Barrett! It was so fun to see your name in my inbox (for having just signed up) because we are naming our baby boy "Barrett" but I have never met a Barrett. It's my husband, Matt's middle name. I just love it and we'll probably call him "bear" as my father-in-law always calls Matt "Bear."

Can you warn me of any other nicknames you've had - both good or bad?

:-)

On a business note - I'm new to the group too but so far it seems like a great system for networking.
