Hey Barrett-

 

On a half dozen blogs I manage, I have the following settings, and I have latest version of akismet plugin working... I still get spam, but almost all spam is trapped.  Comments are hodgepodge sometimes, people you would think leaving good comments, really aren't.  If they don't say something specific about an article or have qualified website or email (joe@howtomakeazilionbucks.com for example), or you don't recognize email from a local person or fan from your FB or LPinw, then they are more than likely spam.

 

unfortunately, I spend 15-30 minutes a month cleaning out spam folders each month, even though I have some tight restrictions and the latest spam controls assisting..  anymore its like graffiti... you just do some scrubbing and move on... eventually the repeat spammers move on...

 

In Settings/General - Membership - uncheck

Settings/Discussion:

Attempt to notify - uncheck
allow link notifications - check
allow people to post comments - check

Comment author name and email required - check
users must be registered - uncheck
anyone can post comment - check
comment held for moderation - check

admin must approve comment - check
comment author must have previously approved comment - check

 

I also use Really-Simple-Captcha plugin and Contact7 - they work together - to eliminate contact spammers..  Up to you if you want to do that on commenters, but pretty much any more, anyone that makes a valid comment will do the captcha thing, as long as you briefly explain its there for Their protection as well as yours....

Thanks for sharing this, David. I'm going to check those settings immediately.

Just after I posted above, it dawned on me that the "Meta" plugin in my footer was probably a source of the registrations. So I removed it. Although that was my favorite way to log in...

the latest WP has an admin feature (under your admin/user settings... to turn on a toolbar that allows you to login - replaces the meta link
