Welcome to YOUR community sharing appreciation for Veterans

Welcome to the Veterans of Military Service community.

We recognize that when we speak of veterans, we are from multi-generation views and needs.  This community is open to anyone who has actively served with the military, is actively serving, and or has been associated with the military in some form during their lifetime.

The important thing here, is to share with you that age, race, sex, branch of service and/or experience are not the qualifying or controlling factors when it comes to need, support, or volunteering.

If you, as a veteran, have a goal to reach or a difficulty to overcome, there are multitudes of opportunities and resources that are available or being made available to empower YOU in moving forward.

It is not about just you, or me or them... it is about us. Veterans who served for a cause and are unified through that service and the awesome community that supports all.

If you have an idea that can help strengthen this community, please let us know. Please encourage others to join us in this effort to work with, for and among those who served. Thank you!

There was desire to remove this link to the National Suicide Prevention Line, however, it is more important to provide a link to those who may need it.  It is my goal and hopefully that of others to no longer need such a link, because we have joined together and found purpose in our own home towns.

Veteran's Suicide Chat line

** you can click on lower tight button to engage in chatline
You will first go to a terms of service page that identifies you as a veteran, tells you that you have an option to not give your name and how the chatline works...
If you are a veteran in suicidal crisis or emotional distress and the chat service is not available because chat counselors are currently assisting other veterans, please call the Veterans Suicide Prevention Hotline 1-800-273-TALK (8255) and press 1.

On July 21 an avid veterans supporter collided with a deer while riding his motorcycle.  The rider was Gary Yoeman - leader of a very popular blues band called Voodoo Church.  Why is this relevant to you?  Gary has a history of freely and generously giving his time and leadership to veteran causes.  Twice he and his band have played at the Veterans Benefit I co-directt.  He gives his time, energy and talent to us - veterans.

Gary's collision sent his bike spinning end over end...he broke about 25 bones - in his hands, his clavicle, bones in his face.  He cracked his spleen  and has road rash for miles.

Gary was just released from the hospital, and while he has insurance, it does not come close to covering his expenses.  Not to mention that with broken hands, it's difficult to play the guitar!  Thus, he has lost his income.

On August 12, there will be a benefit for Gary at Daley's (on Trent, west of where Shumate Harley Davidson was) .  I'll post details as I get them.  So far, there are more than twelve bands lined up to play. Besides his veteran friends, Gary is a true celebrity in the Spokane music community.  My guess is, there will be bands playing inside and outside (on the large patio) all day and night.

I'll be there and hope to see you, too.  This is a small way to give thanks and help a good guy who has helped veterans causes for years.

Semper Fi,
Mike

Veteran Task Force traditionally meets on the second Wednesday of each month.  The Red Cross has graciously agreed to allow us to use their conference room.  Meeting runs from Noon to 1PM with the room open for networking and brown bag lunch for the half hour before and half hour after the meeting.

This month's meeting time was allotted to the SFC History department presentation of Pearl Harbor Veterans and Civilians.  The meeting was held in their Student Union Building at the same time as the traditional task force meeting.  It was a very informative first hand account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor from individuals who experienced it first hand.  The primary narrator was Carol Hipperson, author of "Radio Man", first hand narration of the Bombing of Pearl Harbor.  Congresswoman Cathy McMorris-Rogers was on hand to present the survivors a certificate of appreciation.

Bryan, Thank you for sharing the information on John Dunlap.  He and his wife provided concerned and dedicated support to the Women Veteran's recognition day a couple of years ago. Strong love for Veterans and their families.  His passing is a huge loss for the Veteran community and those who love him.

American Legion Post 143 Commander John Dunlap (Post Falls) passed away last night. He dedicated himself to veterans and their families and will be missed by all in the community.
