Shoestring Budget Business

This is a community to share what works (and doesn't work) for those of us in business who really don't have the capital to improve our situation but don't have much opportunity in this economy to go back to (or find) a J.O.B.

Are you self employed but seriously struggling to keep your bills paid? Do you spend most months wondering if you're going to make your house payment or pay the utility bills? Do you know some of the business services you really need (marketing, coaching, etc.) to gather the momentum you need to move toward success but just don't have any way to pay for them? Let's talk.

Well OK, if you've been planning this for a while, you've got a lot of money squirreled away, you're confident in your business plan, know your market, have good mentoring or coaching in place, etc.…Continue

I have been seeking good mentors for years. Really I'd have to say I've not had great success for the most part. I loosely define a mentor as a role model, coach, confidant & friend who is ready…Continue

Now it’s time to send in your application for the October Visual Arts Tour!  Please mark your calendar for Friday, October 5, and Saturday, October 6, 2012.  The tour is from 5:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday. The public appreciates added hours on Saturday, if possible. Registration forms will be available online at www.spokanearts.org/hottopics.aspx  and at www.downtownspokane.net and paper forms will be at Spokane Art Supply, Chase Gallery, and Pottery Place Plus.

Please keep up the good work with your 80 word descriptive paragraph for publicity purposes (substance and detail in describing the artwork on exhibit). The deadline is Friday, August 31, 2012.

We invite participation from all local galleries—non-profit and for-profit—and we encourage open studios, alternative spaces and business participation in the October Visual Arts Tour.  We would be glad to help businesses find artists and give artists resources to find places to show their work.  Just give a call to Tammy Pruitt at 456-0580 ext. 102 or email her at tpruitt@downtownspokane.net. For all other questions, please call Craig Marshall at Spokane Art Supply (327-6622) or email him at craigm@myartsupply.com.

Registration, accompanied by a check for $35.00, is due to Spokane Art Supply by Friday, August 31, at 5:00pm.  Late registrations not accepted.  Use the attached PDF document.  You can mail in your check and registration form or you can deliver them in person to Spokane Art Supply, 1303 N. Monroe St., Spokane, WA 99201. We will use the registration fee to pay for printing, advertising and other expenses to promote and hold the event.  Press releases and images will be sent to selected media contacts. Once again, the Inlander will be a chief sponsor, producing the tour map and program.  We invite and encourage you to place an ad in the Inlander section at a discount rate, call Carolyn at 325-0638, ext. 214.

It is essential that you send in your registration by the deadline. The press release for this event is a volunteer effort, and we need your cooperation to get information put together and sent out to the media in time to meet their deadlines.

My greatest advise to you is don't buy commercial unless you have to or you will pay double/triple. Don''t contract out anything; do it yourself. Keep minimal insurance and don't over pay for your lease spot. Don't start a business just because you are good at something unless you have checked out the market, competition and if it too easily duplicated. Listen to your friends, family and others and if they think it is stupid, evaluate it again with a more open mind and not with your heart. Spokane is a tough nut to make any money here.Good Luck, you will need it.

Norm,

You are on target I think in the NEED for a forum for this very topic. I think a lot of business owners may not want to admit they are shoe-stringing it. But the reality is...more are than most know about.

As I said, we talk to a lot of business owners....and the simple fact that many do not have even $30 a month to invest in a marketing option that incorporates social media and directly targets their audience (people looking for something to do NOW) speaks VERY loudly to us that businesses are still in recovery mode.  We understand that. This is why we have priced ourselves as we have...wanting to be affordable to every business. So we scratch our heads when we hear how businesses are struggling. We think we can be part of their solution.

We would be very happy to be active in this group. We started on a shoe string and continue to dangle at times on that same string! We do think that business is on the rise for most everyone...including us!

So again, I ask you...how can we help?

I think I may have been remiss in not acknowledging Kim Brown's 12/28/11 comment... Your input is greatly appreciated. Any input or suggestions about giving this community more value to it's target audience would be greatly appreciated. This goes for all members of this community. If it's not going to be something more than an opportunity to share what's bothering you then it will have woefully failed at it's task. How can we make this something that ads real value to the lives and businesses of its members? Without that it's just one more time waster that none of us can really afford. Thanks for your input Kim and all others that have "tuned in." Please stay tuned and ready to participate in real life, not just in something that essentially becomes nothing more than a blog. I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Hi everybody,

I'm sorry to have gotten the ball rolling and then not keeping it on track. Or maybe I should say I got you all to start spinning your plates on top of wobbly poles and haven't been around to help you keep them spinning.

So you want the truth? Of course you do! If you're planning on succeeding in business you must maintain your integrity and what is integrity without truth?

So the truth is this..... I'm also overtaxed (figuratively and literally) and alternate between which plates I keep spinning. I do have a few ideas that we might all be able to benefit from though.

Check out my new discussion on this community..... not too quick, I haven't posted it yet.........  ;>)

I’m getting my business plan together and could use some help. Does anyone have some suggestions on good low cost business insurance, and what I should expect to pay?

In these times we are all looking to find a niche in the community to create a viable business....without spending our whole savings!!

Maybe I can help.

I like the idea of this business community. We speak to many business owners and many are between the rock and the hard place when it comes to running their business. We are included in that! So many things you want to do but limited to what you HAVE to do so some of the most important things don't even get addressed. Not afraid to admit....there is never enough money to meet all the needs to advance our business. But we are finding we are not alone here.....great community! How can we help you grow it?
