In our talks with mid-size firms across the US, we keep hearing them refer to "thought leadership."  They want to establish themselves as thought leaders.

My question to you is simple - define "thought leader."  Can't get it if there's any question about what it is, right?

(Hint - this where everyone in marketing, PR and social media should perk up and voice an opinion.)

First knowing and believing what one is speaking of, then simply sharing what you believe to be new and innovative with others (it helps to be able to have sound evidence).
Thought leaders are a rare mix that have the ability to incorporate data, information, knowledge and wisdom. These leaders use those abilities to provide innovative ideas within their field of expertise (or perhaps consult for others on thier issues). The key, I think, surounds what Allen mentioned; the leadership component. Individuals who want to be recognized in this capacity need to have the confidence to share and promote their ideas so that they can be put into practice.

I'll weigh in here with this... Thought Leaders have above average powers of observation and the ability to process what they observe and project that processing onto current and future conditions within their scope of leadership.  They also have the ability to persuade others and recruit their participation for the (presumably) greater good.
