In this age of marketing, once a book is published, the publishing company no longer does the extensive marketing they used to do. Many of us choose self-publishing to hold the control over the book. Either way, we need to promote our books and build a platform of readers and followers. We can do this by having Speaking Engagements and Events. Join me in this exciting Event!

Our own Sandy Brosam, author of Becoming Bigger than Our Pain has created a 3 day Event Grieving in Plain Sight. What an incredible way to assist others in transforming their pain. First her book, then the healing event! http://www.grievinginplainsight.com/tickets/

THE 50 HOUR SLAM screening becomes an event celebrating the Arts of Spokane.

The Hip Clips

are 16 short films chosen by our 7 illustrious judges and the Slam’s organizers from all the competitors in this year’s 50 HOUR SLAM. The Slam, of course, is the competition where filmmakers have fifty hours to make a short 3 to 6 minute film while incorporating three secret criteria. This year the criteria were the number 50, a historical building, and an original poem by a local poet.

There will be two screenings sessions on May 12, and the audience will be given the opportunity to vote on their favorite and name the winner of THE HIP CLIP Award for 2012.

This year the screening has become a major event as we celebrate the arts of Spokane with an exhibit of local photography entitled "THIS PLACE MATTERS". Several local photographers use their keen eye to capture a few of the historical buildings in Spokane in ways you’ve never seen them before. We’ll also be hosting live performances from poets from BROKEN MIC and GET LIT between the Slam screenings at the Saranac Public House, where we will also announce this year’s winners at the end of the night.

e-books.

If you want to experiment with creating and formatting your own e-books, here are the tools I use.

1) OpenOffice.org (A suite like Microsoft Office)

2) writer2epub (a plugin/addon)

Format the flowing text with section / chapter headers, normal text, and all the rest. When you're ready to test your progress, save your work, click the toolbar button that has the epub logo, and enter your title, summary, date, isbn, and other info. Then load your epub into your ereader and take it for a spin. (This is just for initial tests, right?  You'll still need your Table of Contents and Index, if you're going to include those.)

I've also tested Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/). You can view your ebooks, manage them, and for open (non-drm) epubs you can look at their formating.

There's a lot more to it than this little summary, and there's a whole set of rules regarding the epub "standards". (http://idpf.org/epub)  But it's always fun to experiment first.

If you need any help with any of this, and want to work with someone in town, let me know.  Book projects are always fun!

I have many book cover and publication layout design portfolio pieces to share. Let me know. I'd match written quotes or do better, and we'd be keeping the money in the community.
