Comment by Richard "Dick" Brantley on February 17, 2011 at 10:03pm How many people know the value of a new customer to their business? I ask this alot and not many people know. Check out my web site: www.richardbrantley.net and click on the Marketing Tips tab. At the bottom left hand side of the page you can plug in your number and it will tell you the value. It does not figure in the business a business will recieve from referrals.

Comment by Barrett J Rossie on February 10, 2011 at 2:52pm David's first thought is super important: Define your audience very narrowly so you can focus all your time and community building efforts. You can always expand later. (Your community will probably do that for you.)
But whatever you do, don't make it community for rappers named Fred.
Comment by David Camp on February 10, 2011 at 2:16pm Gunnar, that's good advice from Barrett. Hard to say what the needs are without a deep talk, but I'll take a stab at it.
I took a look at your site. My first thought: what can you do to specialize, to make this even more unique? There are plenty of music fan sites out there. Can you drill in on a genre that's big enough to attract lots of fans yet narrow enough so that you can come up higher in search rankings? Could be Northwest bands, reggae, blues, rappers named Fred...anything.
Then be the champion of that thing. Blog about it. Facebook it. Talk it up at conferences and festivals. Hand out flyers outside the right concerts. Buy a little paid search, so people looking for rappers named Fred can find your site.
Give your people an incentive to join, and to give you their email addresses. Then get a Constant Contact account and email those people with incentives to get their friends to join.
It'd help immensely to do some cool advertising in exactly the right place, whatever that is. Probably a magazine. Just focus on the right one, rather than frittering away budget on small ads in several pubs.
Once you get a little traction, start throwing parties. Promote them well. Get all your fans together. Make it fun. Give people a reason to tell their friends. Then repeat.
