Jill -

Interesting.  Your post transitions from discussion to sales pitch. How to you know when to do that?

Good Morning,

Looks like I missed a great discussion on here yesterday. I would like to respond to Michael's comment:

With respects to Bill -

Please help us understand how to communicate facts that might show a difference in experience.  How can we have two sides of a discussion if we have to tip-toe around one of the sides?  It's a skill I'd like to learn.

As was suggested by Jeff in his comment "please allow me to introduce you to my friend Dale Carnegie." - This is my thought as well.

As the local representative for Dale Carnegie Courses, I encourage anyone who would like to develop greater communication skills in any area, including difference of opinion/experience, to check out the programs we offer locally.  And as was also mentioned in the comments, read How to Win Friends and Influence People. Great stories and information that are just as applicable if not moreso than when the book was written in 1936.

If you would like to learn more please visit http://www.washington.dalecarnegie.com

Thank you. Enjoy your day!

@Rosa--thanks! :)

I just want to point out (or restate--haven't read through this whole chain) that all these various organizations--GSI, LP, Connect Northwest, etc.--are working together to help business of various kinds in various ways.  It is not a competition.  As Bill said, we all have different ways to help and apply more to some companies (or kind of companies) or specific needs than others.  But you don't have to choose one and dis the others...

It looks like I succeeded.  I'd hoped this question would launch a real discussion of a substantive nature, and it has.

Personal opinion - any discussion is a good one.  But, a discussion needs to cover more than just one side of the issue, and we seem to have done that.

What could be better than a discussion?  Action.  Like Lane, I too got a call from GSI. So, it seems some action was taken.  Maybe our discussion inspired that.  Good for all of us!

Those of you who meet with GSI - please let us all know how your meetings go and what action is taken.  I think we all want GSI (and you) to succeed.

Having been a commercial lender for years, the successful companies surround themselves with good advisors and legal help.  All of this can be available for a very small flat monthly fee thru LegalShield and www.gosmallbiz.com.  OurTownZip is another great source to get your name out there.

Lane:

While that information is appreciated, I must be honest and tell you that I don't trust Google's publicly-stated "intentions" even a little. While always under the guise of doing good for their fellow man, Google has often undertaken initiatives that have done great harm to "the little guy", in various fields.

And given their history, I trust GSI's stated intentions even less. I don't know who your friend is and he/she may be sincere. Nevertheless, after events of the past which I would rather not go into right now, I now give a critical eye to anything involving GSI.

As several other people have stated: it is up to people to form their own opinions. I am not trying to say anything bad about GSI... let's just say that these days I am reflexively suspicious.

@ Rosa

I am not very good with websites, is your site pretty easy to use far as getting the initial pages set up?

Comment by Rosa Swatzell on March 30, 2012 at 3:26pm

So much action on this page! Back to the previous posts... Jeff- I would like to add that I totally agree you have to feel it out yourself because certain groups work well for some and others for others. I have heard GREAT things about Catherine Greer and Connect Northwest!

The OurTownZip team would Love to give you any help we can with your Start-up!

Since I was the one that started this firestorm regarding GSI endorsing Google/Intuit's Free Web Site campaign that is currently underway in our market, I wanted to let everyone know that I received a call from one of the key people at GSI just now.  Their intent was to reach out to me and let me know that they had no intention of hurting my business or any of the other small web site development companies in our market who will be impacted by this Free Web Site campaign.  I consider this person a friend and I appreciate them calling me.  As I mentioned to them, when I was the president of the Economic Development Council, no matter what decision I made, at least 30% of the members got angry with me.  So in addition to maintaining a sense of humor about this I really appreciate the fact that they would take the time to call me and go over it.  Thank you.
