Comment by Mark Pond on October 11, 2011 at 7:36am Linda -- I'm right behind you with both my curmudgeon shoes and overcoat.
The vitriol is so unproductive that it tends to drive any moderate voice away from public discourse, thus leaving the forum to the frothing fringes on either side of an issue.
Comment by Linda Finney on October 10, 2011 at 4:21pm I’m putting on my curmudgeon hat to complain about the lack of “civil discourse”—what your Mom and first grade teacher called “good manners.” It’s everywhere, on facebook, the radio, TV. Disagreement is diversity in action, it helps us reach good decisions. But invective, name calling, and bathroom language are harmful, demonizing those we disagree with. They arise from that oldest part of the brain--which is strictly concerned with survival—good that it keeps us breathing, but bad when it gets us on that “us or them” path that eventually leads to great evils, like genocide. Jesus and the Beatles were right when they talked about love. It’s a hard job, but it’s the second commandment and it’s really all we need.

This fundraising event, hosted by Community-Minded Enterprises, will benefit our 17th annual Unity in the Community, Spokane’s largest multi-cultural celebration. Up on the Roof will kick off Thursday evening the 9th of June at 6 pm and will be located on the second floor rooftop patio of the Saranac Building downtown. Guests will enjoy music and a silent auction while sampling on a variety of foods from local restaurants. Mingle with friends and browse the silent auction tables to bid on items from some of your favorite regional sports teams like the Spokane Indians, the Spokane Chiefs, the Seahawks and the Sounders, as well as handmade items from local artists and some of your favorite stores and restaurants to frequent in and around Spokane. Tickets are $20 and will be available at the door.
100% of the proceeds from this event will go toward providing school supplies, safety helmets, and scholarship dollars that support and encourage our students of all ethnicities to stay on the path of education.
Come check out this fabulous event, see you Thursday.

Comment by Linda Finney on March 29, 2011 at 11:08am Spokane Mayor Mary Verner today is encouraging the citizens of Spokane to join her at the NAACP’s “Demand Justice and Promote Peace March” on Sunday, April 3, starting at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena at 3 p.m.
“The Spokane I know is a loving, accepting place that believes in equality,” says Mayor Verner. “As a community, we must continue to visibly stand up against racism and hatred. I am encouraging our citizens to show our support of this event and the critical work of the NAACP.”
The event will commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and follows the placement of an explosive device along the route of Spokane’s annual Unity March on MLK Day this January.
The featured speaker is Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The event is sponsored by the NAACP Alaska, Oregon, and Washington State-Area Conference and the Spokane chapter.
