Not supprising that the conversation is around health care as it is all over the media and it also effects every one of us. The statement that it has to be paid for is correct. Congress appears to forget that when you purchase something a bill comes. At home when I buy something I have to pay for it. I can't say, ignore the bill and purchase more. Thats the mode our goverment seems to be in.

I had a conversation the other day with two very nice people. They try to work hard to just earn a living. One is laid off the other works in a factory and had her wages cut by 10%. They cannot afford health care. Sad though they think that this is the answer, that they will get free heatlh care. They believe that it is going to take away all their problems. They just don't get it that someone has to pay for this. The goverment has no money. To some who are not informed or who are desperate this seems like Christmas.

Aaron that also makes me ask. Regarding your polls on Obama's supporters are they also in the same boat with my 2 new friends. Are are just hard workers who see him as a " Defender of the poor", without beining informed?

Some interesting polling data out today…it raises a unique and likely loaded question. How to interpret Obama’s support among the black population?

In a Gallup poll done this last week, it shows that Obama’s support among the population at large has dropped from 66% to 49%, a 17% drop from his first week in office to today. Other polls show it as low as 38%, but the moral of that story is a significant drop. The poll then details how different groups break down. Not surprisingly those identifying themselves as Republicans have the largest decline in approval, -24%, only -6% among democrats and -18% among independents. But across the board, the numbers have dropped…regardless of age, marital status, geographic region etc etc. Well almost across the board. Job approval among blacks went from 90% to 91%.

To give a little more background and a reference point, support for Bush among blacks ranged anywhere from 41% to 8% during his presidency. Not too surprising of numbers considering most black voters identify themselves as Democrats, and at the lowest point of 8% approval among blacks, Bush’s overall rating was in the low 30’s.

If you are thinking “Bush is a republican and Obama a democrat”, it’s a logical path and important distinction, but polling from the Clinton presidency gives us more to consider on that thought. His approval rating among blacks ranged from the high 50’s to the mid 80’s. More importantly, when Clinton’s approval rating among blacks was in the 80’s, his overall approval rating was in the high 60’s, a logical correlation. But when compared to now, with Obama’s approval rating in the 40’s overall and the 90’s among blacks, it clouds the argument.

Most telling of all is that disapproval among blacks during Clinton ran as high as 33%, a number that seems within reason. Obama’s disapproval rating among blacks has never registered past the margin of error. In most polls that’s between 2-4%. One hundred days into office, a CBY/NYT poll found Obama’s approval/disapproval ratings at 96-0 The pollsters could not find a single person in the sample that disapproved.

So what does all this mean and what is the point? It’s fascinating and I don’t know are the answers. It's hard to ignore that while the country is by most accounts "in the crapper", the president's approval among blacks simultaneously soars. As I bounced this quandry around to a few people explanations ran the gamut from “black people stand together” to “its some kind of blind reverse racism”. I would imagine the truth is somewhere in between the extremes as is usually the case. What is true for sure is that I love politics and all things debatable. So in that regard take this dangerous morsel of politickin banter and have at it. =)

I agree with the basics of what Aaron and Ken are saying about the health care.

What the administration and its supporters aren't talking about is how it gets paid for and how does the paying. Those people are the kings (and queens) of obfuscation. There is no free lunch nor free health care. Small businesses and most taxpayers will be the subsidizers.

Our hospitals - for better or worse - are already obliged to treat whomever hits their emergency room - and with the same level of care that paying people get.

More regulation is not required. The market forces are what have been - and will remain - the determinants of competitive pricing in all our economy. If you want to goof up any system, be sure to get more governmental involvement. The record is crystal clear on this.

Reading previous posts...death threats? Really? Come on...citing that is equivalent to the "viciousness" in those opposing healthcare you deride.

The health care bills in the house and senate DO affect your private coverage. The bills have specific provisions to do just that. How and to what degree is of some debate.

If the goal is competitiveness, why don't we lift the restriction on interstate coverage that currently limits competition among health insurance providers? Neither bill addresses that problem.

And its almost laughable to say we need gov't to provide competition. There are 3,200+ health insurance companies in the US. About a third of those are non profit. Tell me how the notoriously inefficient gov't is going to be more cost affective than a private not for profit insurance company? It is fundamentally impossible. What WILL happen though, is that the gov't will subsidize their coverage with general funds, and by doing so create and environment where many private companies cannot compete and will close doors.

Let's have an honest discussion about what is going on here, and how it is being gone about. More often than not you can assess the quality of the legislation by the amount of daylight they are willing to give it.

We are like hogs encouraged to eat. We will wind up as tomorrows breakfast.
If we let our legislators put us on this slide we will never get off. But that is the plan. Socialized dominance of all Americans. Mocking the Constitution.

I was on the ground during the breakup of the former Soviet Union. I can tell you what we are experiencing today smells to high heaven. I spent hundreds of hours in the former Soviet Satellites, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan as well as Russia.

Health care reform as the Obama machine call it is the first step to socialism then the on to communism. There are no winners except the power brokers at the top. Corruption will take place to the likes you have never seen or could possibly imagine.

God help the future generations. That is to say if God is allowed to remain in our lives. He no longer is in our schools is he?

Pray while you can this gets turned around now.

Go back and read the "Manufactured Crisis" comment. Here is the link to make it easier for you. It will take some time to go through all of it. I really think it is worth your consideration. http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/09/barack_obama_and_the_strateg...

I believe we need a public option in order to ensure private providers are as competitive as possible. Remember, what is being proposed is an "option." No one will lose there private insurance if that is what they wish to maintain. I am as or more concerned about the nearly 100 million Americans without health care coverage in this the greatest nation in the world. I fully support President Obama's efforts here, and I am terribly saddened by the viciousness of the anti-health care reform with death threats and all now well documented. That is NOT civil discourse on a very important subject.

I'm curious what any of your thoughts are regarding the dealings between Senate Finance Committee and White House regarding non-profit insurance cooperatives vs the government insurer Pres. Obama wants in the health care reform...and how do our healthcare providers weigh in? It seems that the Senate will pas the bill with this change and I am very concerned that they are going too fast with this process. I visited with some of our hotel guests last night from Canada - their opinion was our White House needs economics 101 and this bill will bankrupt our nation. I understand 52% of our health care is through Government run insurance (Medicare) - Spokane Community Care does a better job making those dollars work for us - a private contractor. More Government control scares me!

Chasity....I grew up in Portland {Lake Oswego}...Even though it is a big city, I recall biking-(Safely)-downtown in 1979 when I was 13 years old. Now, fast-forward to 2009...many cities are emulating Portland Oregon in numerous ways. Beyond the bike paths and streetcars, and of course, "MAX"....it really is a unique city. Denver is great too, but not as friendly to the walker or biker. As larger cities grow more and more congested, I think you will find pockets of big cities focus "mini-regions" on the old west. Like Troutdale Oregon, where people park a few blocks away and walk for a few hours. Tons of cute little stores, restaurants, bars...etc
