LaunchPad - INW

Spokane Area Professional Networking, Events and Business Development

A survey conducted by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a national outplacement organization, concluded that 8.6% of unemployed workers started their own companies in 2009. With the largest increase taking place amoung people 55 and older.

Does this hold true for Spokane? and are we as a business community ready to support this movement?

Spokane is actually healthier than many other communities in small business starts. Yesterday, I attended a starting your small business workshop put on by SCORE and the room was packed. Everyone had a different idea for the area they wanted to start or improve their business. It was a great group. Spokane is more conservative than many cities, the trainer said that put us in a better financial recovery spot. Besides with such great support like we have here at LaunchPad INW, can't imagine having better odds at starting. IT isn't the question of is their room for small business. It is a matter for being more prepared before you go into debt, and filling a need .. matching your service to the demands. Good stuff happening all over Spokane and local communities including Spokane Valley .. like Dave said.. you betcha!

Great Points Jurene,

I believe the Spokane business community offers or has available some great resources for Entrepreneurs.

The real question that I think of when we see this percent of an increase is: Where is the business going to come from? Do we believe it is going to come through natural attrition; enough businesses vacated the space creating an opportunity for the new businesses? Or is there demand that has not been serviced, creating unique opportunities for the new businesses?

The age old task or objective of knowing your space, and knowing your competition seems more prevalent than ever. And not just what it was 6 mos ago, but knowing it continually, then operating as efficiently and precise as possible. Quality, service, and focus is even more critical as competition increases.

The way of doing business has changed drastically. We have more informed buyers because of the internet and the availablity of information at our figuretips. The times of the "USED CAR SALESMAN" tactics don't work these days. We have to establish enough relationship with our buyers that we can find out what they NEED, WANT, or DON'T WANT. The next twenty years are going to be exciting because people are getting tired of being used by the Government and Big Business. This is a period of time in which companies should be gaining strength. Those who have positioned themselves well should be acquiring assets and talent at dirt cheap prices. From my experience I have seen companies layoff, freeze hiring and subsequently offer poor service. A smile and a thank you for your business is a very inexpensive way to grow business and out serve your competitor.

There is great opportunity within this market to launch new businesses. In addition to Launchpad their are several other organizations devoted to developing entrepreneurial talent and ventures. I would say as a nation we were not prepared for this recession. From this recession many new and unexpected problems have arose. To an entrepreneur one person's problems are the entrepreneur's opportunity. This is a great time for entrepreneurs in Spokane and the USA as a whole.

Everyone needs to read Zane Paul Pilzner's book THE NEXT TRILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY. It opened my eyes to the fact if you want to make a million dollars you need to supply what the Baby Boomers are looking for before someone else does. I am not very smart but I know some very smart people.

I've found Spokane to be an EXCELLENT place to launch my business. I've been serving local customers for just over a year now, and have found that the community is very supportive of start-up businesses. Rent is very affordable, people have been lavish with referrals, and there are an amazing amount of "under-the-radar" incredibly successful national businesses in the region. After working in LA and Seattle for years I will NEVER go back : )

The reason the economy has and is taking a dip is this next year the start of the 59,000,000 Baby Boomers are going to turn
65 years old and are thinking of paring down not buying more stuff. They are keeping their cars longer and their furniture longer and less of everthing. But what they are looking for is ways to live longer and healthier. They also want to have FUN in their GOLDEN YEARS. The next twenty years will see these Boomers turn to HOME BASED bussinesses that they can do at their leisure and still have a lifestyle. There are lots of them out there but few survive more than 3 years. Still in three years you can make a huge nest egg. I happen to have found the best one I could find. Carl Grant
